Dealing with a Credit Card Collection Agency’s Sneaky Tactics

cardsA credit card collection agency can often be heard banging down the mailbox with notices of past due payments and endless phone calls to the debtor trying to get the money that is owed to the company. What many consumers aren’t aware of is that these credit card collection agencies often use tactics that they are not supposed to when trying to recover the debt that is owed to the company.

The consumer can avoid these sneaky tactics that collection agencies use by following this advice:

  • Be sure to get verification from the credit card collection agency about the amounts that are owed and verify this information with the original creditor. Chances are, if you are unable to recall the debt than there could be a discrepancy in the amount.
  • Know when they can call. A credit card collection agent can only call after 8 in the morning and before 9 in the evening. If they call outside of these times than the debtor has full right to ask them to call back at a more appropriate hour.
  • If you submit in writing a request for the credit collection company to stop contacting you, they must adhere to this request. They have to acknowledge your request and can no longer contact you. Keep in mind that unless the debt is paid this will remain on the record as unpaid debt.
  • If you employer does not allow creditors to phone the place of employment than they are no longer allowed to call when offered this information.
